Matt Miazga rejoins Reading on season-long loan from Chelsea

Matt Miazga

Reading have re-signed Chelsea defender Matt Miazga on a season-long loan for the 2019/20 season.

Miazga joined the Royals as one of six loan signings in January 2019 and made an instant impact in the side as he helped Reading to retain their Championship status in their close shave with relegation.

The 24-year-old defender attracted attention from Chelsea having impressed for New York Red Bulls which prompted the West London club to sign him on a permanent deal in January 2016.

He has since been sent out on loan where he played two seasons at Dutch side Vitesse before a short spell with Nantes in France.

Jose Gomes’ side recruited the United States international on loan in January 2019 as the defender helped to tighten up a leaky Royals defence alongside Liam Moore.

He made 18 league appearances for the Berkshire side as they narrowly avoided relegation in a tense conclusion to the 2018/19 Championship campaign.

Reading have now bolstered their squad with three signings as Miazga joins permanent signings Michael Morrison and Charlie Adam who were both announced this week.

“Even as a player at the early stage of his career, Matt showed last season that he has a mature head on young shoulders and plenty to offer the squad both on and off the pitch,” said CEO of Reading FC, Nigel Howe.

“I am pleased that he has been keen to return to Reading and I look forward to seeing his contribution for the Royals in the coming season,”
