NEWS that the new leader of Wokingham Borough Council wants to declare a climate emergency is welcome.

There can be no denying that the world is getting hotter, the polar ice caps are melting and whole countries across the globe are suffering as a result.

If you want to hear the devastating effects that global warming is having on the world then All Saints church in Wokingham is the place to be on Saturday night.

It is a wise leader who takes action, and this is exactly what has happened.

In his maiden speech as council leader, Cllr John Halsall said: “It may be voguish and considered as jumping on the bandwagon, but the imperative of the clock ticking means that we have no option but to take on this target.”

He is right.

Teenagers from some of the borough’s schools gathered in Reading last Friday to show their support for tackling climate change.

It is the biggest issue of our time and more pressing as a result.

We are slowly waking up to the dangers of our plastic-addicted lives, now is the time to change.

We can all play our part: food waste recycling, buying bamboo toothbrushes and using public transport where possible.

This is not just about ourselves, and our borough today – it is about our future and those that come after us.

Cllr Halsall’s first move as leader is a wise one. We need to heed his call and get behind one issue that transcends party politics for the sake of us all.
